How Do I Prepare for Fraxel Laser Treatment?

Before your procedure, you will meet one-on-one with a licensed Dr. Patty Miami skin specialist to discuss your concerns and determine whether Fraxel laser is appropriate for you. Then, your provider will thoroughly clean your skin and apply a topical anesthetic to the target area.

The procedure itself only takes about 15 minutes for the entire face and 30 minutes or longer for larger areas, like the arms or legs. However, we have to wait until the numbing cream kicks in before applying the lasers, which takes 45 minutes to an hour. All in all, you can expect each Fraxel laser session to last about 2 hours total.

What Happens During Fraxel Skin Resurfacing?

Fraxel laser treatment doesn’t hurt. But it doesn’t feel great, either. You may experience a burning or stinging sensation, which should be very tolerable with the topical anesthetic. Your provider will also use cold air during the procedure to minimize discomfort.

Does It Hurt?

Immediately following your procedure, your skin will look and feel like you just had a bad sunburn. During the first two days, you can expect mild swelling, throbbing, and redness. Cool compresses and ice packs will help calm down your skin and reduce inflammation, but avoid hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, and intense exercise for at least 3 days or until your skin no longer feels tender.

Between days 3 to 5, your skin will start to peel. Resist the urge to pick the flakes and scales at all cost, as it may cause scarring and will lengthen the recovery process. Make sure you apply sunscreen every day, even if you are staying indoors. You’ll also want to avoid harsh products like scrubs and chemical peels for at least a week.

What’s the Recovery Like?

The benefits of Fraxel skin resurfacing can last for years. Because it stimulates collagen and elastin production, your skin will keep rejuvenating over the following months as the deeper layers continue healing.

With laser skin resurfacing, your skin will look softer, plumper, and more radiant. However, laser treatments don’t stop the natural aging process, so your skin will keep aging as the years go by. Depending on the extent of the correction, you may need up to five treatments to achieve your desired results. At Dr. Patty Miami, we space out Fraxel sessions 4 to 8 weeks apart to give your skin plenty of time to heal.

Are the Results Permanent?

Each Fraxel laser session costs between $1,200 to $1,800, depending on the size of the treatment area. Since it’s a cosmetic procedure, medical insurance doesn’t cover Fraxel treatments.
